【英語多読】Christmas Cards ～海外では年賀状を送らない～
どうもどうも、いちから英会話のヒカリノです。
今週の英語記事では、この時期に送られるクリスマスカードについて書きました。1回記事を読んでみて自分の力で意味を推測してから、下のボックスを開き、理解を深めていきましょう。
In Japan, it is common to send New Year’s Day postcards at the beginning of the year. However, in English-speaking countries, we do not do this. Instead, we send Christmas cards.
Christmas cards are greeting cards that have Christmas-themed images on the front, such as pictures of winter or of the birth of Jesus. We send the cards to friends and family between December 1 and December 24. We usually write a message such as “Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” on the inside of the card, so the card is a New Year’s greeting too.
When we receive Christmas cards, we display them in our homes. Because the cards are Christmas-themed, they look good with our Christmas decorations.

日本では、1年の始まりに年賀状を送ることが一般的です。しかし、英語圏ではこれはしません。その代わり、クリスマスカードを送ります。
クリスマスカードとは、冬の絵やキリスト誕生の絵などのクリスマステーマの画像が表面に描かれている挨拶カードです。12月1日から12月24日までの間に友達や家族に送ります。普段「幸せなクリスマスと良いお年をお迎えください」というようなメッセージをカードの中に書きますので、新年の挨拶でもあります。
クリスマスカードを受け取る時、それを家の中に飾ります。カードがクリスマステーマだから、クリスマスの飾りと似合います。
