【英語多読】Vinegar Valentines ～昔バレンタインデーは嫌いな人にカードを送ってた？！～

今週の英語記事では、昔バレンタインデーの習慣の１つとして送られていた「ビネガーバレンタイン」について書きました。1回記事を読んでみて自分の力で意味を推測してから、下のボックスを開き、理解を深めていきましょう。
We often send an anonymous card to the person who we like on Valentine’s Day. This card is called a valentine, and it usually has a romantic message or poem on it. This tradition began in the Victorian era. However, at that time, sending cards to people who you did not like was also common. These cards were called “vinegar valentines.”
Vinegar valentines usually included a picture and a mean message or poem. For example, some cards said that the person reading was cold-hearted or that everyone hated their bad singing. Some were completely cruel and told the person reading to kill themselves. Like normal valentines, the person who received the card did not know who had sent it. In addition, they had to pay for the card’s postage.
The cards were very popular. Almost half of the valentines sent around 1850 were vinegar valentines. Even in the past, humans were cruel when people could not see their names.

バレンタインデーに好きな人へ匿名のカードを送ることがよくあります。このカードはバレンタインといって、普段ロマンチックなメッセージや詩が書いてあります。この習慣はヴィクトリア朝に始まりました。しかし、その時は、嫌いな人へカードを送ることもよくありました。これらのカードは「ビネガーバレンタイン」といいました。
ビネガーバレンタインは普段絵とひどいメッセージか詩を含めていました。例えば、読み手が薄情だというカードや、皆読み手の下手な歌が大嫌いだというカードがありました。完全に冷酷で、相手に自殺するように言うカードもありました。普通のバレンタインと同様、カードを受け取った人は誰がカードを送ったか分かりませんでした。また、そのカードの郵送料を払わなければなりませんでした。
