どうもどうも、オーストラリアの夜空を眺めるのが好きないちから英会話のヒカリノです。
10月になったわけで、お店はすっかりハロウィーンムードですね。でも、今年のハロウィーンはちょっと特別ですよ。なぜなら、その日はブルームンというのがあるからです。
今週の英語記事では、そのブルームーンという現象について、簡単な英語で紹介します。1回記事を読んでみて自分の力で意味を推測してから、下のボックスを開き、理解を深めていきましょう。
In English, we sometimes say “once in a blue moon.” This means “very rarely.” When I was a child, I thought that a blue moon was a moon that looks blue. However, a blue moon is not blue. When there are two full moons during one calendar month, we call the second one a blue moon. This usually only happens once every two or three years, so it is unusual. This year, there was one full moon on October 2, and there will be another full moon on October 31, so the full moon on October 31 will be a blue moon. We will call it a blue moon, but it will be a normal full moon.

英語では、時々「ワンス・イン・ア・ブルー・ムーン」と言います。これは「ごく稀に」という意味である。子供の頃、ブルームーンとは青く見える月のことだと思っていました。しかし、ブルームーンは青ではありません。１つの歴月の間に満月が2回ある時、2回目の月の事を「ブルームーン」と呼びます。これは普段2・3年に1回しか起きないので、珍しいです。今年は10月2日に満月が1回あって、10月31日にもう1回満月があるので、10月31日の満月はブルームーンになります。ブルームーンとは呼びますが、普通の満月です。
