【英語で学ぼう】Why Do People Wear Costumes on Halloween? ～なぜハロウィンに仮装をするのか？～
どうもどうも、いちから英会話のヒカリノです。
ハロウィーンが近づいてきたので、いよいよ今年もハロウィーンテーマの記事を書きました。以前trick-or-treatingという、子供が仮装をしてお菓子を貰いに家を訪ねる行事について書きましたが、そもそもどうしてハロウィーンに仮装をするのでしょうか？
今週の英語記事では、その理由として挙げられている説の１つについて書きました。高校レベル以上の単語が少し多くなりましたが、頑張ってください。1回記事を読んでみて自分の力で意味を推測してから、下のボックスを開き、理解を深めていきましょう。
Why do people wear costumes on Halloween? People do this all around the world, but no one knows why we do it. Some people think that the tradition may have come from an old festival called Samhain (sow-in).
Samhain was a festival celebrated by the Celts more than 2000 years ago. The Celts were the ancestors of the Irish and Scottish people. They celebrated Samhain from October 31 to November 1 every year to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that their ancestors’ souls could come to our world during this period. They also thought that bad spirits and fairies could come and take people back to their world. So, the Celts dressed up as animals and monsters so that the spirits and fairies would not know that they were human.
Some believe that this is the origin of wearing costumes on Halloween. There have been other similar events and festivals, but Samhain is the oldest.

どうしてハロウィーンに人はコスプレをするのでしょうか？世界中の人々がしますけど、なぜするかだれも分かりません。この慣例はサウィン祭とい祭りから来たかもしれないと思っている人がいます。
サウィン祭とは、2000年以上前にケルト族によって祝われた祭りでした。ケルト族はアイルランド人やスコットランド人の先祖でした。夏の終わりと冬の始まりを祝うために、毎年の10月31日から11月1日までサウィンを祝いました。ケルト族はこの期間中にご先祖様の魂が私達の世界に来ることができると信じていました。そして悪い霊や妖精が来て人を自分の世界へ連れて帰れるとも思っていました。なので、霊や妖精が自分達が人間だと分からないように、ケルト族は動物や怪物の仮装をしました。
