In December, a plant called mistletoe is often hung in houses as a Christmas decoration. Mistletoe is a parasite. This means it grows on other trees and uses them to live. It stays green during winter, even when the tree it is growing on has no leaves remaining, so it was once seen as a symbol of life. There are many mistletoe traditions. For example, one tradition is that if a man and a woman are standing together under mistletoe, the man can kiss the woman, and she must let him. This is a tradition that began in England and is popular around the world.
