【英語多読】Tally Marks ～線で5個ずつ数える時、どんな風に描く？～
どうもどうも、いちから英会話のヒカリノです。違う国に住むと、意外なところが違ったりします。
今週の英語記事では、個人的に意外だった違いの１つ、「画線法」というものについて、簡単な英語で紹介します。1回記事を読んでみて自分の力で意味を推測してから、下のボックスを開き、理解を深めていきましょう。
Tally marks are lines which are used to represent numbers. The lines are usually drawn in groups of five. They are an easy way to count numbers that will increase. People from different countries draw tally marks in different ways. For example, in Australia, the USA and most of Europe, people draw four vertical lines, and then one diagonal line through the vertical ones. In some parts of Europe, people draw a square with a diagonal line through the middle. In countries that use Chinese characters, such as China, Japan and Korea, people draw the Chinese character “zhēng” (正), which means “correct” and has five strokes. Tally marks are common to many countries, but their shape has a lot of variety.

タリーマーク(画線法)とは数を表現するために使われる線です。線は基本、5本のかたまりで描かれます。増えて行く数を数えるのに簡単な方法です。違う国から来た人は異なった形で線を描きます。例えば、オーストラリアとアメリカ、ヨーロッパのほとんどでは、人々は縦線を4本描いてから、縦線を交差して斜めの線を1本描きます。ヨーロッパの一部では、真ん中に斜め線の入った四角を描きます。中国や日本、韓国等、漢字を使う国では、人々は５画で描かれて、「正しい」という意味をもつ漢字の「正」を描きます。タリーマークは多くの国で共通していますが、形が色々あります。

画線法に違いがあると初めて知ったのは、日本の小学校の授業でゲームをしていて黒板に点数描いていた時でした。５点まで達成したチームの点数に５本目の線を描いたら、児童が点数を消されたと勘違いして大騒ぎでした。(笑)
