【英語多読】Don’t Shout! ～そのローマ字で人に怒鳴ってない？～
どうもどうも、ライティング指導をよくするいちから英会話のヒカリノです。
今週の英語記事では、日本人のライティングにありがちな間違いの１つについて、簡単な英語で紹介します。1回記事を読んでみて自分の力で意味を推測してから、下のボックスを開き、理解を深めていきましょう。
When my students write about Japanese brands or words in English, they often shout. They like to shout words like “DAISO” or “ARASHI.” When we write a sentence in English, we sometimes use capital letters to show shouting, or to make a word’s meaning stronger. SO, IF I WRITE LIKE THIS, I AM SHOUTING AT YOU, and of course, you should NEVER write like this in an essay. It is okay if you are writing an acronym, such as BTS or NEET. However, names and words such as “Nike,” “hanami,” and even “Arashi” should not be written in capitals unless they are on a logo or sign.

私の生徒が日本のブランドや言葉について英語で書く時、叫ぶことがよくあります。「ARASHI」や「DAISO」などの単語を叫ぶのが好きです。英語で文を書く時、叫んでいることを表すためや、単語の意味を強調するために大文字を使うことが時々あります。なので、こんな風に（オール大文字で）書けば、私はあなたに怒鳴っていて、もちろん、論文では決してこんな風に書いてはいけません。BTSやNEETなどの頭字語なら大丈夫です。しかし、ロゴや看板に書いていない限り、「Nike」や「hanami」のような単語、「Arashi」でさえ大文字で書かれるはずがありません。
