今回の英語記事では、ハロウィーンの象徴の１つである「ジャックオランタン」について、簡単な英語で紹介します。1回記事を読んでみて自分の力で意味を推測してから、下のボックスを開き、理解を深めていきましょう。
In October, many American people make lanterns out of pumpkins and put them outside their homes as decorations. These lanterns are called jack-o’-lanterns. They are easy to make. First, cut off the top of a pumpkin. Next, use a spoon to take out the flesh. Then, draw a face and use a knife to carve it. Finally, put a candle inside, and you have made a jack-o’-lantern.
This tradition began in Ireland. In Ireland, people made lanterns from turnips, potatoes and other root vegetables to protect their homes from bad spirits. When some Irish people moved to the USA, they started to make the lanterns from pumpkins instead. Now, jack-o’-lanterns tell trick-or-treaters that they are welcome.
