【英語多読】The Great Emu War ～マシンガン対エミューの勝者は？～

今週の英語記事では、昔オーストラリアで実際に行われたエミュー戦争について、簡単な英語で紹介します。長めですが頑張ってください。1回記事を読んでみて自分の力で意味を推測してから、下のボックスを開き、理解を深めていきましょう。
After World War I, the Australian government gave farm land in Western Australia to people who fought as soldiers in the war. They told these veterans that they would pay good money for their wheat, so the veterans began growing lots of it. Then, in 1932, their wheat farms were found by 20,000 emus. The emus liked wheat. They came to eat it in large groups. They began destroying the wheat farms, and the veterans could not stop them.
The veterans asked the government for help. They asked them to send machine guns. The government sent soldiers with two of them. On November 2, the war began. The soldiers found 50 emus, but they were far away, and the soldiers could not kill any of them. On November 4, the soldiers attacked a group of 1,000 emus, but killed only 12. By November 8, the soldiers had used 2,500 bullets to kill just 200 emus. The emus were too smart, too fast, and continued to run even after they were shot.
When the war ended on December 10 that year, the soldiers had used 9,860 bullets. They had killed just 986 emus. The emus had won.
