Have you ever seen a roundabout? A roundabout is a circular intersection. It has an island in the middle and there are no traffic lights. Cars can only travel clockwise around this island, and they must not enter the intersection if there are cars on their right. People must drive slowly around roundabouts, so they are safer than normal intersections.<\/p>\n

In Australia, we have thousands of roundabouts. I go through one every time I drive. But when I lived in Japan, I never saw any roundabouts, so I thought that Japan did not have any. However, there are about one hundred roundabouts in Japan now, and more are going to be built. <\/p>\n

Japan started to build roundabouts after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. After the earthquake, there was a blackout. Traffic lights turned off, and people did not know what to do at the intersections. So, Japan decided to build roundabouts in places that often have earthquakes, and the first roundabout in Japan opened in 2014. If you have never seen a roundabout, you may see one in the future.<\/p>\n
