You might know that many English-speaking countries celebrate a day called Easter every year. Many Christians also celebrate a period called Lent. Lent begins on the Wednesday forty-six days before Easter and usually ends on Easter Sunday. During Lent, Christians can eat only plain, simple food like bread. As a result, they need to use up food such as eggs, butter and milk before then. The best food for this is pancakes. For this reason, it is common for people to make and eat pancakes on the Tuesday before Lent. This day is called Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Tuesday, and it is celebrated by both Christians and non-Christians around the world.
